Faculty sabbatical lecture by Maud Lavin, Professor, Visual and Critical Studies and Art History, Theory, and Criticism
With a deeply androgynous, gender-flexible public persona, Li Yuchun (b. 1984, Chengdu), is one of the most popular singers in the People's Republic of China today. In this lecture, Lavin will analyze Li Yuchun's "gender-neutral," zhongxing, appearance to question the changing stereotypes of femininity in contemporary P.R.C. mass culture and consider how transgendering and stereotype evolution can function hand in hand.
