Elaine Tanski (b. 1991, Oakland, CA) received her BFA from UC Davis in 2013 and is currently a second-year MFA candidate in the Painting and Drawing Department at SAIC. Her practice involves the manipulation of naturally and synthetically dyed materials that are often combined with traditional painting and printing techniques. Tanski’s paintings are built out of abstract elements that point to figure/ground relationships. Aiming to suggest a lack of fixedness or a great sense of continuity, her forms belong to a world structured by geometry but pushed onward by improvisation.
