Monique Prieto is a Los Angeles-based artist . Prieto's paintings have evolved, as Bob Nickas wrote, from purely abstract work, "figurative abstractions comic and playful, both antic and poised, …[ in which ] …form and color are one and the same so in effect have weight and presence" to include phrases from the diaries of 17th century British naval clerk Samuel Pepys: "not written by Prieto but painted by her." Both bodies of work are both narrative and abstract. As Prieto puts it: "There is the romantic narrative, me in the studio - and the political narrative, me in the world". Prieto has had numerous solo exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe, including ACME, Los Angeles; Cheim & Read, New York; Corvi-Mora, London; Il Capricorno, Venice; and Praz-Delavallade, Paris. Her work is in many public collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. She received a BFA from UCLA and an MFA (and second BFA) from the California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles, California.
