Shalen Stephenson (b. 1991) is a Canadian artist living and working in Chicago IL. He is a MFA candidate in the Painting and Drawing program at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he is originally from Vancouver BC where he received his BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. He works within the realm of abstraction exposing the visually unknown through a process of superimposing layers of paint and other materials on a surface. Continuously building upon and against systemic modes of production Shalen’s paintings reflect the way he views his existential position. He is fascinated with creating contemporary visual languages that engage ideas of awkwardness, anxiety, beauty, and humor.
