Sara (Thompson) Zalek is a performance artist, designer, poet, dreamer. She has been secretly documenting her thoughts, drawings, and dreams in journals that span her life. Primarily, she is obsessed with the body in crisis, the dream of transformation, and the regeneration of the body, using expressionist and surrealist performance to create public performances. In 2004 she began to study butoh and found that through it, she could discover her shaman self and begin to reflect abundant hope for her own body and the bodies of others. Since that time, she has created and persevered on solo, collaborative, and ensemble works that re-create mythologies, rituals, and fairy tales.
Sara is the Associate Director of Marketing & Communications at The Council for Adult & Experiential Learning, a national non-profit linking learning to work.
Sara has spent many years traveling the world, often by bicycle, and sharing stories of adventures that fill the lives of those she touches. She earned her M.A. in Marketing/Psychology at Syracuse University in 1991, and her B.F.A. at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2006. Since April 2010, she has worked often with Aurora Tabar, in 2010-11 on the Hug Project, and in residence together at Links Hall in Chicago, performing Mystical Bootcamp in 2012.
