Why do American political campaigns fail to mention art and culture as important policy domains? Why is the National Endowment for the Arts pathetically small compared to its international counterparts? Visiting Lecturer and economist Ann Markusen explains why in her November 30 lecture, recounting the power of art and artists to provide inspiration, insight, beauty, and social critique and to address racism, sexism and poverty. Sharing her research on artists and creative placemaking, she will address the power of art and the financial and organizational challenges of artists. Through photographs, she will document the achievements of artists and arts organizations here and abroad at making the world a more human and joyful place.
