Avant-garde art movements began in Paris and dispersed to other cities throughout the world. The German occupation of Paris clearly showed that modern art could (and should) be continued in other parts of the globe. Artists in Buenos Aires saw themselves perfectly poised to carry the baton of the European avant garde forward. In her 2012 Lifton Lecture—titled “Imagining the Future: The Post-war Avant-Garde in Latin America”—Professor Andrea Giunta will discuss Argentinean artists Gyula Kosice, Lidy Prati, and Tomás Maldonado’s works as paradigms of the post-war abstract avant garde in Latin America in terms of its forms and ideas.
