Let's Get to Work!
To President Wilson-Oyelaran and the Kalamazoo College Board of Trustees; to the distinguished faculty, staff and alumni of this historic institution; to the family members and friends of the graduates; and most of all, to the members of the outstanding Kalamazoo class of 2013—good afternoon!
I am honored to have been asked to be your speaker for this special occasion. And I am most pleased to have been awarded your honorary Doctor of Science degree. Thank you for thinking so highly of my work that you would allow me to add the designation K-Kid to my list of titles. I will bear the name proudly.
I am especially pleased to be here because Kalamazoo has many characteristics similar to my alma mater, Morehouse College, and to the institution where I currently serve as president, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, SAIC.
Both institutions are committed to the liberal arts.
And like Morehouse, the alma mater of Martin Luther King Jr., Kalamazoo, has a tradition and commitment to social justice and community engagement.
