Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion: DEIAA
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion of Academic Affairs (DEIAA)
SAIC is committed to assembling a diverse community of faculty, students, and staff and to nurturing and creating an environment in which different perspectives and backgrounds can be heard, valued, and utilized. In this spirit, the overall focus of the office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Academic Affairs is to infuse our work into the academics of the School. This strategy includes working closely with individuals and departments who seek to foster and implement programs that build on creating spaces where we can learn and develop as a community of artists and designers.
Throughout each semester, the office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion of Academic Affairs offers a series of programs and workshops to scaffold on-going learning and promote an inclusive environment. In addition, members of the DEIAA team work closely with individuals - students, faculty and staff - when concerns arise or support is needed. Finally, ongoing and very deliberate collaborations with offices and departments across the School are developed to assist in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) goals.
Our aim is not to center the office of DEIAA but rather to serve as "connectors" that promote DEI goals, support specific DEI needs, and foster a campus-wide dialogue where as citizen artists we can listen, learn, and inspire.
The DEIAA team
During AY 2018-2019, the DEIAA team has expanded in membership and expertise in order to meet the increased demands of our time and energy and to also deepen our work. We recognize that the nature of this work requires team members who not only possess the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to recognize and address harmful structures, systems, and practices, but who can also proactively create and nurture wellbeing within the School. We are three scholar-practitioners who rely on each other to further our individual development in order to enhance our practice.
